SMC Networks and Rorke Data Team-up to Accelerate the Encoding Process for Sample Digital with 10G Networked Storage Systems

Rorke® Data Galaxy LX™ NAS system connected via SMC® Networks 10Gigabit Ethernet adapters and switches provides for ultra-fast storage access

IRVINE, CA April 19, 2007 – SMC® Networks (www.smc.com) and Rorke® Data (www.rorke.com), a subsidiary of Bell Microproducts®, today announced that the two teamed-up to deploy a powerful, efficient 10Gigabit-networked storage system for Sample Digital, a company that has been providing media encoding services to the film and technology industries since the start of this century.  The new network attached storage (NAS) system at Sample Digital reduces production time and increases accuracy, so Sample Digital can optimize turnaround—and, thus, profitability.

“Ours is a business that relies on fast turnover of jobs for our profitability, so we never stop looking for faster and more efficient solutions,” said Sample Digital’s Chairman, Josh C. Kline.  “There’s no room for error, either. We’re extremely happy with the success we’ve seen opening bottlenecks with the 10Gigabit networking attached to these super-efficient storage systems.  We’re producing cleanly-encoded digital video from our customers’ media faster than ever.”

Sample Digital tried numerous storage solutions, and endured inefficiencies with direct-attached storage, a media array and a number of traditional storage servers before finding out about Rorke Data’s storage solutions that network using SMC Networks’ 10Gigabit core aggregator network switches.  Now that they’ve installed the Rorke/SMC system, the high-volume, dynamic, transient and time-sensitive content that Sample Digital processes moves more quickly through the system for greater efficiency and faster turnaround.  Sample Digital still receives its content primarily on tape and feeds it into its encoding systems for processing, as before, but the encoding systems now store the pre and post-processed content on a Rorke Data Galaxy LX™ Linux-powered 30 Terabyte NAS system that’s networked via SMC Networks’ TigetSwitch™ SMC8708L2 Standalone 8-Port 10Gigabit Managed L2 Ethernet Switch for ultra-fast data movement that speeds processing.  For additional data security, their system also incorporates a Rorke Data Galaxy HDX™ 10 terabyte RAID6 storage system.

“We got up-and-running with the new system fast, because Rorke and SMC staged and tested the system—to our specifications—before they even shipped it to us,” added Kline.  “They were truly a gigantic help.  We look forward to expanding the SMC/Rorke system.”
