Rorke Data and MRV Announce Partnership At NAB 2006 Targeting Post Production/Broadcast Industry
Rorke Adds MRV’s New HD/SDI Digital Video SFPs to its Worldwide Distribution Channel for Uncompressed HD Video Over Campus/Metro-Wide Fiber Backbone
EDEN PRAIRIE, MN – April 24, 2006 – Video Broadcast industry specialist Rorke Data, a subsidiary of San Jose-based Bell Microproducts, Inc. -- NASDAQ:BELM, and MRV Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVC), a leading provider of products and services for out-of-band networking, WDM and optical transport, metro Ethernet, fiber optic components, 10GE and other service aware networking products, today announced the signing of a national distribution agreement for MRV’s newest family of digital video fiber-optic transceivers, Digital Video SFPs (Small Form-Factor Pluggable). The new Digital Video SFPs will enable post-production facilities and rich media studios to transport uncompressed HD/DV-SDI video over standard fiber optic networks.
“Until now, HD content has meant networking headaches for production houses because the only effective means of long-distance HD transport has been expensive HD-only networks. With the MRV Digital Video SFP, HD can ride on an existing fiber network, allowing companies to build cost-effective networks or use the ones they already have in place – ending the HD networking nightmare,” said Noam Lotan, MRV President and CEO. “We are looking forward to combining this technology with Rorke Data’s depth of experience to bring cost-effective data solutions to the market.”
This partnership between MRV and Rorke Data will allow post-production facilities to share uncompressed baseband HD and SD video throughout a metropolitan area. Because they are SFPs, the MRV Digital Video Transceivers can be installed in fiber-optic
systems from a wide variety of manufacturers including fiber-optic cross connects and wave division multiplexers, which have adopted this MSA transceiver standard. By combining the transceiver with MRV’s own fiber-optic cross connect and wave-division multiplexing (WDM) systems, production facilities can create a wide range of HD networking systems:
”With MRV’s new Digital Video SFPs, post production and broadcast customers can transport high-resolution content without degradation over metro or campus-wide distances, between any combination of decks, cameras, even video servers and NLE systems that rely on ubiquitous SDI connectivity,” said Joe Rorke, VP of Marketing and Business Development for Rorke Data. “MRV’s cost-effective, Broadcast/Video specific utilization of fiber optic networks is a natural extension of Rorke’s high-capacity, high-bandwidth data storage and network infrastructure product offering. Customers in these markets are increasingly specialized,” Rorke continued, “therefore interdependent, collaborative workflow is required. MRV enables efficient HD collaboration.”
Each MRV Digital Video SFP has a coaxial cable connector that takes a DV feed from a camera or production system, converts it into a fiber-optic signal and transports that via the optical transport system’s standard MSA SFP connector. They are available for the DVB-ASI (270 Mbps) standard, the SDI (270 Mbps) standard, and both the PAL/SECAM (1.485 Gbps) and NTSC (1.4835 Gbps) standards of HD-SDI.
