Rorke Data Upgrades
DAM Software for A/V Applications

Oracle8i, Oracle interMedia Technology, 100% Java Front End and Robust Archiving Combine to Create New DAM Solution

Las Vegas, NV, NAB99, Booth #16554/LVCC, April 19, 1999Rorke Data, Inc., a leading developer of high-end storage and software solutions, has announced a major upgrade to the company's FLEXSTOR.db digital asset management software for audio/video applications.  The upgrade includes the integration of interMedia cartridge technology and Oracle Application Server 4.0 (for transaction processing), and the use of Enterprise Java Beans and Java objects within the database.  Rorke also announced that it will continue to support the new Oracle8i software release in all future FLEXSTOR.db applications.

Rorke Data's FLEXSTOR.db is a cross-platform, enterprise-wide digital asset management application that offers its users the ability to easily archive and quickly retrieve thousands of digital files – whether audio or video -- throughout large and small organizations. Among other important benefits, Oracle8i allows FLEXSTOR.db users to effectively manage their digital assets across the Internet from multiple locations.

FLEXSTOR.db is a Java-based digital asset management solution suited for the most demanding, high-volume, large-scale file environments, including all the various segments of the audio, video, post-production and broadcast markets.

Rorke Data selected Oracle as the database engine for FLEXSTOR.db because of Oracle's lead position in the marketplace and the company's proven ability to offer a high-performance, scalable product with support for all types of digital assets. The Oracle8i version of FLEXSTOR.db will maintain the traditional benefits of previous versions of Oracle's database products while extending the Internet capabilities.

By means of Oracle 8i's built-in Internet capabilities, Rorke Data's new and existing customers will be able to more effectively manage their digital assets on a local, regional, national and worldwide basis, said Joe Rorke, VP/Marketing.  "Using Oracle 8i as the underlying database engine for FLEXSTOR.db, we're now better positioned to offer our customers innovative ways to store, access, and distribute multi-media digital assets by minimizing the artificial barriers imposed by platforms, file formats, network environments, and geography. With the growing dominance of the Internet as a means to efficiently transfer digital assets among an organization's employees," said Rorke, "or between clients and service providers, we expect Oracle8i to provide us with the means to capture the attention of a vast new range of potential FLEXSTOR.db users."

Oracle8i adds a number of important new features to FLEXSTOR.db. Through the addition of video analysis and full text search cartridges, searching for key video frames has been made even easier, resulting in improved user productivity.

Emphasizing platform independence, on-demand and scheduled file archiving/retrieval, and transaction logging, FLEXSTOR.db has been enhanced to support multiple Internet sites concurrently and provide content dynamically.

With its Archive module, FLEXSTOR.db can migrate high-resolution files from on-line mass storage to near-line and archive storage subsystems (attached to the same server or network), while low-res files remain immediately accessible on magnetic storage. Assets in FLEXSTOR.db are managed in their native formats, ensuring file integrity at all stages, as well as compatibility with the applications being used in the actual operations environment.

As the industry's first database to integrate Java programs, web sites, and Internet content, Oracle8i builds on the secure, scalable foundation of Oracle8 to reliably manage Internet applications by thousands of users over corporate and public networks. The new features will help companies and developers build Internet-savvy applications that lower costs, enhance customer and supplier interaction, and provide global information access across platforms and across the enterprise.
