The integration between QStar Publisher Archive and the Rorke High Performance XRN 50 - XRPN 100 Disc Publisher Appliance provides storage management functionality with automatic migration of data between fast access disk technology and low-cost removable archive media. The solution is based on a hybrid storage structure which allows the enterprise's reference data to be managed on available disk stores, and provides data protection with cost effective off-line expansion of archives by moving or copying data to removable media when needed. QStar Publisher Archive utilizes multiple levels of functionality so the solution can be customized as the customer needs it.
Publisher Archive™ from QStar addresses these issues in much the same way as the auto industry is addressing more fuel efficient cars; with a mix of technologies that take advantage of energy management. QStar uses a hybrid approach with an intelligent mix of disk for fast access to data and optical for long term retention. The sophisticated solution manages the flow of data between the disk and archive media to optimize data access and preservation while using less power and allowing data to reside secure within the network.
Archiving Workflow Key Features
Dynamic Storage Allocation
The capacity of an integral volume automatically and transparently increases as required, providing users with virtually unlimited capacity for data storage. This is done without intervention from the administrator.
Removable Media Management
On-line and off-line media are internally and externally labeled, documented, and automatically managed to guard against operator errors. QStar's software handles all tracking and processing of removable media, storing their location in the media volume database so that media not currently in the drive can be identified and accessed. A special interface lets the customer transport data storage media between devices on different hosts, even if they are running on a different operating system.
By providing a mechanism to track media outside of the system, logical volumes may grow in a book shelf solution beyond the available on-line capacity of the publisher product. With the entire file system directory structure cached for easy data selection, prompts are made when off-line data is requested and email notification can be sent for the retrieval of off-line media, providing the most energy efficient archive model available today.
Customization
One or multiple copies may be made from the online archive, and a custom label can be made for each removable disc. An easy-to-use disc labeling application is provided so users can create, import and customize the graphics that will be printed on the CD, DVD or Blu-ray disc surface. The label designer enables easy adding of background colors, additions of custom text, photos, mail-merge data and even bar codes by clicking and dragging within the simple CD Designer user interface.
Media Interchangeability
With QStar's nonproprietary Universal Disk Format (UDF), the removable discs created may be physically transported between different operating system platforms and read in standard local drives, ensuring data access well into the future.
All archival media are self-contained, with file directory information, data, and indexes on the same disk, or tape. This feature provides transportability between devices and operating systems.
Disaster Prevention and Recovery
Because of the on-disk format, any hard disk in the storage hierarchy can be completely rebuilt from the underlying archival media, thus preventing catastrophic data loss.
QStar understands the storage impact to small businesses. This solution is ideally suited for applications that require data retention with limited need for online access.
