Introducing Sun Java Desktop System, Release 2
Java Desktop System, Release 2 delivers the best of open source software with the technical innovation of Sun to offer an affordable, comprehensive, fully integrated desktop client environment with administration and developer tools and an enterprise-ready support offering that lowers business costs, reduces complexities of desktop management, and provides a secure computing environment.
The desktop components are based on open source and standards and include the GNOME desktop environment, StarOffice productivity suite, Mozilla browser, Evolution mail and calendar client, and Java 2 Platform Standard Edition. Java Desktop System is the only desktop solution which includes without additional cost server-side administration tools which enable centralized configuration, deployment, and administration of the user desktop environment. In addition, Java Desktop System includes advanced developer tools to assist developers in creating Java-technology based applications for the desktop.
Business Benefits
Interoperable and Comprehensive: The Java Desktop System is a comprehensive desktop solution which works with your existing infrastructure.
- Designed to thrive in a Windows-centric world or any Unix environment. Java Desktop System is fully interoperable: from office productivity, file systems, networked printers, to exchange and LDAP based identity, messaging and calendaring systems.
- Fully integrated desktop solution. Includes the client desktop, system administration tools and developer tools in a single package.
More Manageable and Secure: Java Desktop System is a more secure desktop solution.
- Fine-grained control of user environments. Advanced desktop management features enables administrators to lock-down functionality, applications or complete user environments providing more secure and productive computing environments (i.e. turning off macros, disabling downloads, etc.)
- Minimize threats from viruses and worms. Windows desktops are frequent targets of viruses and worms creating serious productivity drains. The Java Desktop is less susceptible to virus and worm attacks due in part to a superior security architecture and Sun's desktop management tools.
More Cost Effective: Java Desktop System is more cost-effective than Windows.
- Java Desktop System pricing is based on a very low cost-per-employee subscription. Compared to Microsoft Windows XP/Home and Microsoft Office Standard, the total cost of acquisition can be up to 60 percent less and at least 25 percent less than the total cost of operating a Microsoft Windows desktop system for 2,500 employees.
